How Can We Predict Patterns of Motion? If we know the pattern that a moving object is following, we can make predictions about where it will be in the future. This video will make students think about motion that they have seen before such as a moving swing, a roller coaster, or a Ferris wheel.

Students will learn how to formulate pattern-based predictions about objects in motion by participating in interactive activities. They will be creating a homemade marble run and exploring what happens to the marble as they drop it from different heights. They will find out that Marble follows the pattern of a tube.

This video satisfies the 3-PS2-2 requirement for third-grade science proficiency.

Students who demonstrate understanding can:

3-PS2-2. Make observations and/or measurements of an object’s motion to provide evidence that a pattern can be used to predict future motion.
