Law of Superposition

Published on September 18, 2022 by

This video will help students understand an important concept in geology – law of superposition.  This law states that wherever you have rock layers, the youngest rock is the top layer, while the oldest rock is the bottom layer. Application of this law can be observed in sedimentary rocks. This video also features an experiment so that the students can see this law in action.

This video satisfies the 4-ESS1-1 requirement of fourth-grade science proficiency.

Students who demonstrate understanding can: 4-ESS1-1. Identify evidence from patterns in rock formations and fossils in rock layers to support an explanation for changes in a landscape over time.
