A Driving Force for Weather and Climate

Most of the Earth’s water is stored in oceans. In this animation video, the students will explore how these massive bodies of water drive our weather and climate. Heat from sun helps drive atmospheric and oceanic circulation. Winds drive currents on the ocean surface. Phenomena such as El Niño and La Niña, that replace cold water with warm water, have the ability to alter weather patterns by steering storms to new locations. Heat exchange between ocean and atmosphere can influence the climate, for example it can turn storms into massive hurricanes. All in all, oceans are essential to life on Earth and without them our planet won’t survive.

This video satisfies the 5-ESS2-1 requirement of fifth-grade science proficiency.

Students who demonstrate understanding can:  5-ESS2-1. Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.
